Alice grew up in Montvale, NJ. She had an older sister, Ethel, and five older brothers - Arthur, Joe, Bill and Walter. Her father and brothers were sportsmen, engaging in hunting and fishing. She attended the Montvale School which was just across the street from the Burlington house on Grand Avenue. One of her schoolmates there was Mary Ann Evans, who later married her brother Bill. Her dancing teacher was Phyllis, who later married her brother Joe. Her next-door neighbor Agnes Huff was a good friend, as were her cousins Elinore and Ruth and Alice Marshall.
